In ISO/IEC 42001 (an AI management system standard), performance refers to how well an organization’s AI management system (AIMS) and related controls achieve intended outcomes, and how effectively results are monitored, measured, analyzed, and acted on. It includes defining measurable objectives, selecting indicators (KPIs, KRIs, and control indicators), collecting reliable data, evaluating trends, and using findings to drive continual improvement through management review and corrective actions. Performance covers both the management system (e.g., completion of risk assessments, audit results, corrective action closure rates) and operational outcomes (e.g., incident detection and response times, control effectiveness, service availability, and AI-specific quality measures such as model drift, robustness, and post-deployment monitoring results). Strong performance evaluation links metrics to risk, decision-making, and accountability so that leadership can determine whether controls are working as intended and whether residual risk remains acceptable. Similar performance evaluation concepts appear across other management system and assurance approaches (for example, information security management, risk management, and trust/assurance reporting), but ISO/IEC 42001 emphasizes performance measurement in the context of responsible AI objectives and AI lifecycle governance.

Organizations typically use dashboards that aggregate ticketing, monitoring, vulnerability, audit, and risk data into role-based views, enabling consistent measurement, evidence retention, and executive reporting.

Metrics show whether controls meet targets, reveal recurring gaps, and provide traceable evidence of monitoring, reviews, and corrective actions, which supports continual improvement and strengthens audit readiness.
